The new Adobe Flash Media Playback is a free, standard media player for the flash platform, it can be used in any site with only a few lines of HTML, enabling playback of video and other media in minutes. Its extensible plug-in architecture enables easy integration with content delivery networks. There’s a easy to use configuration page to set up the look and feel of Your Player. A thing to note it’s that this is not the Open Source version Strobe Media Playback. so if you want to dive in to the code of the player itself that’s probably a best solution, but if you are looking for a fast way to deliver video content in your blog or site try Adobe Flash Media Playback

Features

Easy configuration
Easily configure the standard functionality of Adobe® Flash® Media Playback. Control capabilities such as autoplay, autohide controls, poster frame definition, control bar positioning, and more — without the use of Adobe Flash authoring tools.

Custom look and feel
Completely replace each of the existing elements of the standard user interface with your own custom artwork.

Streamlined standard functionality
Eliminate duplicate efforts by leveraging the logic built into Flash Media Playback. Enjoy support for standard playback functions such as play/pause/stop, rewind, fast forward, DVR, multibitrate switching, and video navigation.

Integration of latest Adobe Flash Platform features
Enable quick integration of the latest Flash Platform features such as HTTP Dynamic Streaming and DVR functionality.

High-quality, multiprotocol support
Deliver the highest quality playback experience for the given bandwidth, detect and recover from error conditions, and improve overall user experience by working with the latest features of Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and Flash Media Server 3.5 software and HTTP Dynamic Streaming.

Open source file specifications
Achieve a live streaming experience using the MP4 fragment format, the industry standard for adaptive bitrate delivery, including open file format specifications for the media and manifest formats.

Plug-ins for advertising, analytics, and content delivery networks
Enhance your media player to monetize and track your content by utilizing plug-ins for advertising, analytics, and content delivery networks. Flash Media Playback allows you to load plug-ins hosted by partners dynamically, allowing your services to be upgraded without any changes to your website.

Adobe released an update to the FLVPlayback component (v2.5.0.15) for Flash CS4 and Flex 3.

Excerpt from Kevin’s blog. Go there for more detailed information

Today(22-may-09) we released two free tools; the new DVRCast application for Flash Media Interactive Server 3.5, and an update to FLVPlayback component. You can find them both on the Flash Media Server productivity tools page: http://www.adobe.com/go/fms_tools/. You can read more from a new article from David Hassoun posted here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashmediaserver/articles/live_dvr_pt2.html

DVRCast uses existing technology built into the server, DVRCast extends the server functionality with abilities to manage metadata, start and stop and scheduling of DVR-enabled streams.

Adobe has updated the component to support DVR functionality. We now support this component in both Flash Professional CS4 and the Flex SDK. The current version is FLVPlayback 2.5.0.15, and is included in the DVRCast download. You can also download it separately.

Adobe Strobe it’s a new media video player framework from Adobe that intends to set an standard for media players.

If this work out it wold be really helpful, nowadays every developer and company has it’s own way of building a player not following standars for a simple reason, there are not any standars, so hopefully Strobe will help to solve that problem.

Strobe framework will work as a plug-in model if you need some specific behavior of the player you would build the necesary classes on top of the framework. This would be a relief for those developers who need a video player but for one reason or another end uo rewriting the entire player.

Quoted fro Adobe’s

Strobe provides new delivery and monetization options for video distribution. Anyone can develop modules that plug into Strobe media players and enable things like advertising insertion, content delivery and syndication, micropayments, viewer authentication, transaction handling, and business model controls. With an open framework, the future of web video monetization can be developed collaboratively with lower costs and faster turnaround.

So let’s wait and see once Adobe Strobe is released.

Adobe has just dropped the licensing restrictions on the SWF and FLV formats as part of the open screen project .

Here’s an excerpt of the text in the Open Screen Project’s site.
The Open Screen Project is dedicated to driving consistent rich Internet experiences across televisions, personal computers, mobile devices, and consumer electronics. The Open Screen Project is supported by technology leaders, including Adobe, ARM, Chunghwa Telecom, Cisco, Intel, LG Electronics Inc., Marvell, Motorola, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics Co., Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Verizon Wireless, and leading content providers, including BBC, MTV Networks, and NBC Universal, who want to deliver rich Web and video experiences, live and on-demand across a variety of devices.
Specifically, this work will include:

    * Removing restrictions on use of the SWF and FLV/F4V specifications
* Publishing the device porting layer APIs for Adobe Flash Player
* Publishing the Adobe Flash® Cast™ protocol and the AMF protocol for robust data services
* Removing licensing fees – making next major releases of Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR for devices free.

What does this means for us developers ? It means that now you can use this formats to create players that read in this formats… exiting huhh !!!!.
More info and a video of Kevin Lynch Adobe CTO explaining more deeply what this means for the developer community visit the Developer section of the Open Screen Project on Adobe’s site.
